109 JUSTICE - VARNA - FLOODING - COURT

Criminal Case over
2014 Deadly Flooding in Varna
Dropped Conclusively

Varna, on the Black Sea, August 28 (BTA) - The Appellate Court in Varna dismissed a criminal case over the flooding of the city's Asparouhovo neighbourhood in 2014, which claimed 13 lives. The decision was made last Friday on an appeal by the Varna District Prosecution Office, the local Appellate Prosecution Office reported on Tuesday.

The appeal by the District Prosecution Office was against the District Court's reversal of an earlier dismissal of the case.

The latest court decision is based on the assumption that the Asparouhovo flooding of June 19, 2014 was caused primarily by extreme rain, whose occurrence was confirmed by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology. Other factors such as landslides, household and construction waste, and buildings constructed (illegally) in the gorge where the tragedy happened, were not the main reason for the drastic scale of the damage inflicted on infrastructure and housing and for the 13 deaths.

This latest court judgment is unappealable. LI/VE
