Meteorologists Resume Protests Demanding
Exit from Academy of Sciences over
Inadequate Financing

Sofia, August 29 (BTA) - Meteorologists with the Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) resumed their protests Wednesday demanding to leave BAS over what they see as inadequate distribution of the BAS budget and insufficient financing of their work.

The protests started on June 21 and ended after talks with the government when they were told that they should try to find a solution in talks with the BAS leadership.

The Wednesday protest started outside the BAS headquarters and moved to the government building where the protestors insisted that the government should make a decision on the future of the Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology "before it gets too late".

The weathermen's choice is to go under the umbrella of the Education and Science Ministry as they want to preserve their institute's status as a research organization.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said that he will be meeting both sides in the conflict later in the day and that "if the BAS General Assembly is unable to solve the problem, then we will".

At a news briefing in the Council of Ministers building, Education and Science Minister Krassimir Vulchev said that "exit from BAS emerges as a more realistic, sustainable and acceptable option" for the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.

He explained that the Institute members will be able to choose whether to stay with BAS or move as the Institute moves.

The decision will likely be considered by the BAS General Assembly on September 10, said the Minister.

He added that in any case the matter should be resolved before the start of 2019 so as to have clarity about the financing. LN//
