Education Minister: This Year's
First Graders Expected to Number
Around 60,000

Samokov, Western Bulgaria, September 13 (BTA) - Education and Science Minister Krassimir Vulchev Thursday said that there will be some 60,000 first graders in the 2018/2019 school year, which is by several thousand less compared to a year earlier due to the smaller number of children born in 2011 as opposed to 2009 and 2010. He was talking to journalists during his visit to the Metropolitan Avksentiy Veleshki Primary School in Samokov.

The teams tasked with ensuring children enter and remain in the education system are working on the country's territory, Vulchev said. They monitor five- and six-year-olds in kindergartens, pupils from first to seventh grade, and high schoolers. In his words, some 50,000 to 60,000 children in the education system are at risk. Among them are children who the mobile teams could not find on their addresses, children who have been found but have not been enrolled in school, and pupils who do not attend their classes regularly.
