Bulgaria Has EU's Largest Increase
in Export-Supported Jobs
in Relative Terms in 2000-2017


Brussels, November 28 (BTA) - A European Commission report entitled "EU Exports to the World: Effects on Employment and Income" found that Bulgaria was the Member State with the strongest increase in export-supported jobs, 312 per cent, in relative terms between 2000 and 2017 - the period covered by the report.

Further down the list of countries with the strongest increases in relative terms are Slovakia (213 per cent), Portugal (172 per cent), Lithuania (153 per cent), Ireland (147 per cent), Estonia (147 per cent) and Latvia (138 per cent).

The report found that EU exports to the world are more important than ever, supporting 36 million jobs in the EU. Export-related jobs are, on average, 12 per cent better paid than other jobs in the rest of the economy. The manufacturing sector still supports the majority of jobs linked to exports (54 per cent) across the EU.

Exports from Bulgaria to countries outside the EU support 662,000 jobs in Bulgaria. Another 122,000 Bulgarians are in jobs linked to exports from other EU countries to countries outside the EU. This means 22 per cent of jobs in Bulgaria depend on EU exports.

Bulgarian exports to countries outside the EU support over 35,000 jobs in the rest of the EU. In Bulgaria, most people in export-related jobs are medium-skilled workers.
Fifty-four per cent of export-related jobs in Bulgaria are in services. LN/DD
