Minimis Subsidies

May 17 (BTA) - Over 1.3 million leva has been paid out to tobacco growers as de minimis aid for sold and unpaid produce in previous years, Agriculture Minister Dessislava Taneva said Friday quoted by her press office. She was speaking as she met with tobacco growers in the northeastern village of Pristoe where she visited together with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov.

She recalled the State Fund Agriculture has approved a budget of 3.2 million leva in aid for tobacco growers after their meeting with the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister urged tobacco growers to get their crops insured against natural disasters.

The Agriculture Minister said that in the past 24 hours three regions in the country were hit by bad hail storms: Nova Zagora, Stara Zagora and Karlovo.

She reminded farmers that they can apply for compensation but only if their crop is totally ruined.

Early data from the local agricultural authorities indicate that just over 400 ha of farmland has been affected by the hail storms. IG/LN/
