PM Borissov Congratulates North
Macedonia, Albania on EC's Recommendation to
Open EU Entry Negotiations


May 29 (BTA) - In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Bulgarian
Prime Minister Boyko Borissov congratulated his counterparts
Zoran Zaev of North Macedonia and Edi Rama of Albania on the
European Commission's recommendation to open negotiations with
the two countries on their entry in the EU.

"I congratulate the prime ministers of North Macedonia and
Albania, Zoran Zaev and Edi Rama. The Bulgarian EU Council
Presidency remains in history with how it put the topic of the
Western Balkans on the table," Borissov wrote on his Facebook
page.

Later on Wednesday, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said in a statement it welcomes the publication of the European Commission's 2019 Enlargement Package, which confirms the leading principles of the enlargement policy: the principle of own contributions and the focus on rule of law and fundamental freedoms.

The EU's enlargement in the Western Balkans remains a priority topic for Bulgaria and should continue to have an important place on the European agenda. Goodneighbourly relations, regional cooperation, and rule of law are criteria of horizontal significance falling within the framework of conventions, the statement reads.

The statement reads further that Bulgaria will carefully analyse the European Commission's reports and recommendations to assess their reliability and objectivity.
