Bulgarian Socialists Distance Themselves from
PES President's Words of Approval for
PM Borissov

Sofia, July 5 (BTA) - The Executive Bureau of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) does not support the words of Party of European Socialists (PES) President Sergei Stanishev that Prime Minister Boyko Borissov is acting like a statesman, not as a politician, the BSP information service said.

In their opinion Stanishev's words are most inadequate.

Earlier this week, Borissov said that the possible nomination of Stanishev as President of the European Parliament for half of the mandate would be an honour for Bulgaria and the GERB MEPs would vote for him. Things, however, did not come to that as Stanishev pulled out his nomination for the sake of PES' unity.

Speaking for the Bulgarian National Radio on Thursday, Stanishev expressed gratitude to Borissov for the support and said that the Prime Minister did not act as a politician but as a statesman. "In a sense we have both grown up and become wiser with the years. When it comes to Bulgaria's interests I can also work with Borissov," Stanishev said.

"Bulgaria is the poorest and most corrupt country in the EU. Corruption is the reason why it is not allowed in Schengen. The parliamentary republic, division of powers and the state of law have all been trampled. Bulgaria has reached the bottom in terms of freedom of speech. We declare that the BSP attitude to Borissov's policy and the government he heads remains unchanged: they are harmful for Bulgaria and a change is necessary," BSP said. LN/BR
