Sofia, December 6 (BTA) - Minister of Economy Emil Karanikolov and Carsten Bittner, board member of Group Technology Foundations Commerzbank AG, discussed the bank's intention to open an IT hub in Sofia, the Economy Ministry said. During the meeting, Bittner presented the investment plan of the bank, pointing out that, at first, some 400 jobs will be created for highly-trained ICT professionals, and the plan is for this number to reach 600.
Karanikolov said that the Commerzbank project is expected to attract other major German companies to invest in Bulgaria.
In mid-2019, the number of employees in Bulgaria's ICT sector exceeded 62,200 people. In the second quarter of this year, the turnover of companies in the ICT sector increased by 28.9 per cent compared to the like period of last year, the biggest increase for the last 18 months. The year-on-year increase for the first quarter of 2019 was 20.6 per cent.
Currently, there are about 12,500 companies operating in Bulgaria's ICT sector.
