Energy Minister:
Coal-powered TPPs
Vital for Bulgaria's Electricity System

Plovdiv, Southern Bulgaria, October 20 (BTA) - Commenting on recent tensions over the coal-powered Maritsa East thermal power plants, Energy Minister Temenouzhka Petkova told journalists on Sunday that these plants meet 46 per cent of electricity demand in Bulgaria, and even 60 per cent in the winter, which means that the national electricity system could not function properly without this type of facilities.

Discussing the Belene nuclear power plant project, Petkova said 13 bids have been submitted for the project, including seven for strategic investor. The bids are being considered at the moment, and those candidates who will be admitted to negotiations will be shortlisted later on. They will be asked to submit binding offers and to hold substantive talks. "I hope we make it this time, because the situation is different," the Energy Minister said.

She noted that the state-owned energy companies have good financial results, with the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant ranking among the top 10 most successful businesses in Southeastern Europe.

Petkova was in Plovdiv to inspect a new backup control centre and a new operations support centre of the Electricity System Operator (ESO). The two facilities were built under 5 million euro worth of projects to upgrade the management and control systems of the ESO Central Control Department with co-funding from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
