February 3 (BTA) - Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova has been nominated in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category of the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards for her "ultra-crude, yet surprisingly sweet turn in 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm'," The New York Times reported on Wednesday. CNN also covered the story.

"Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" has also landed the nomination for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, and Sacha Baron Cohen for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for his appearance in the same film.

This year's Golden Globes ceremony will take place at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on February 28.

Bakalova, 25, was born in Bourgas (on the Black Sea). She started singing and flute lessons at age 6, then she attended the National School of Arts in her native city, majoring in acting for drama theatre and a second major in flute. Later, she enrolled at the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia and graduated in 2019. Her acting career in Bulgarian film making includes "Transgression" (2018) and "Last Call" (2020).

Critics have enthused about Bakalova's performance as Tutar Sagdiyev, the daughter of fictional Kazakh reporter Borat Sagdiyev, in "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" (2020). Matt Fowler of IGN described her as "the film's fantastic find" and "every bit Sacha Baron Cohen's on-screen equal" "who, and what, most people will be talking about in the wake of [the movie]." Justin Chang of The Los Angeles Times praised her "terrific" portrayal of her character's journey "with madcap energy and touching conviction". LG
