WWF Bulgaria's Position at COP26:
A Healthy and Protected Environment
Is an Important Ally against Climate Change

Sofia, November 4 (BTA) - WWF Bulgaria believes that a healthy and protected environment is an important ally in the fight against climate change, the organization said. On Thursday it presented an opinion at the annual UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.

The EU and the Member States should use COP26 to show higher, faster decarbonization is compatible with a developed economy and a fair society, the organization said.

Georgi Stefanov, Climate and Energy Practice Lead representing WWF Bulgaria at COP26, said: ''As a wealthy region with strong public support for climate action, the EU must be ready to lead from the front, but also to be at the side of regions in need. The EU's own Just Transition and Recovery Funds must only go to projects that contribute to the fight against climate change and put the needs and values of communities first. This is the only way to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis falling on those who are least responsible for it.''

The environmental organization said positive signals were coming from Bulgaria's political scene. WWF Bulgaria praised the fact that at least four political entities had committed to a proposal of the Green Restart Coalition (MOVE.BG, WWF Bulgaria, Greenpeace Bulgaria, and the Institute for Circular Economy) that the future government should have a deputy prime minister for climate transition and green transformation. ''This post is of particular importance for the course we have taken,'' said WWF Bulgaria.

WWF Bulgaria's Climate and Energy senior expert Apostol Dyankov said decarbonization has already been set as a direction for Bulgaria and the world. Rather than talk about dates, the countries should think how it can be achieved in the energy sector, transport, agriculture and industry. The various governance recipes proposed by the parties are steps in the right direction, but they should be defended publicly and applied immediately in a concerted manner. RY/DD
