Renewable Energy Sources Won't Suffice in Case of
Natural Gas Supply Crisis in Bulgaria,
Says NGO Gas Coordinator
Sofia, November 30 (BTA) - Gas Coordinator in the Friends of the Earth Bulgaria Association and in CEE Bankwatch Network Rory Forster argues that natural gas is not a stable source of energy while Bulgaria relies on natural gas for its future development. In Forster's opinion, if this country implements the plans for gas infrastructure development, in case of a possible gas crisis its renewable energy sources (RES) will not be enough to cope with the situation.
Forster cites a 2017 survey of Central and Eastern Europe commissioned by the International Renewable Energy Agency which showed that Bulgaria has an achievable potential of a little over 23 GW from wind and solar energy alone, which he says is an incredibly big possibility. Added to this are the options provided by geo-thermal and water energy. The expert says that if Bulgaria uses to the full its potential for RES, it can export RES-derived energy.
Forster says that solar energy is the cheapest source of electricity. He argues that the government should invest in solar energy projects.
The expert further warns against Bulgaria's increasing dependability on Russian natural gas which he says does not improve the situation. This could have been done if alternative projects for RES facilities had been implemented, Forster says. MY/ZH
