Twice Higher Prices of Vegetables for Easter than Previous Year, Lamb Reaches 15 Leva/Kg

Plovdiv, Southern Bulgaria, April 8 (BTA) - Lamb meat, which is
traditionally eaten for the Orthodox Easter, has reached 15
leva/kg in stores, while sheep breeders offer it at between
5.50-6.00 leva live weight. Compared to last year, there is less
lamb on the domestic market but enough to meet the demand for
the holidays, Chairman of the National Association of Animal
Breeders Boiko Sinapov tells BTA. Sinapov attributed the fewer
lambs to the outbreak of blue tongue last year which delayed
sheep insemination.

Sinapov said that it is untenable to demand halting of lamb
imports but stressed that there are enough Bulgarian lambs to
meet the domestic demand.

Lamb offal trades at half the price of meat, between 6.00 and
7.50 leva.kg. Imported deep-frozen lamb offal sells at 4.00
leva/kg.

Eggs, the second most important staple at the Easter table, sell
at 0.20 to 0.23 leva per piece. Eggs are purchased from poultry
 breeders at 0.17 leva/piece.

The price of lettuce increased steeply already last week. Its
wholesale price is 1.00 lev per head of lettuce, up to 1.20 leva
 - 1.30 leva of red romaine lettuce. This is twice as high as
last year, when lettuce sold at 0.50 - 0.60 leva. Bulgarian
greenhouse cucumbers trade at 2.30 leva/kg on the wholesale
market. The high price of spring vegetables is attributed to the
bad weather conditions: snow and rain.
