EC Asks Bulgaria to Upgrade Its Mining  Waste Legislation

Brussels, April 29 (BTA correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) - The
European Commission (EC) has urged Bulgaria to upgrade its
legislation on the waste management from extracting industries
in compliance with EU rules, the EC said in a Wednesday press
release.

The Mining Waste Directive aims to prevent or reduce the adverse
effects on human health and the environment, resulting from the
waste management from extractive industries. The EC has sent a
letter of formal notice in January of 2014, due to a number of
shortcomings in the Bulgarian legislation which could result in
a reduced human health and environmental protection.

Bulgaria has still not adopted the necessary measures and the EC
is now sending a reasoned opinion. Bulgaria has two months to
act, after which the case may be referred to the EU Court of
Justice, the Commission said.
