Socialist Leader Mikov: There Are Grounds for Protests Every Day and Everywhere
Sofia, May 1 (BTA) - "Under the Constitution, people have a
right to express their voice in the street, when they are
deprived of rights and aren't heard by the incumbent," Bulgarian
Socialist Party (BSP) leader Mihail Mikov told journalists on
Friday. He was speaking during a rally organized by his party on
the occasion of Labour Day, May 1. Asked whether there are now
grounds for protests, Mikov said: "Every day and everywhere." He
cited workers at military factories and private companies which
do not observe safe working conditions, adding that a
right-wing government can't be expected to protect workers.
Thousands joined in the May 1 rally in Sofia. The day was
observed in many other cities across the country.
Addressing the rally, Mikov said that May 1 belonged to those
272,000 people, the poorest working people in Europe, who were
robbed of 408 leva by the current government. "May 1 celebrates
everyone looking for a job and all who have a right to
dignified labour, dignified pay and safe working conditions," he
said.
Addressing those who think of May 1 as an anachronism, Mikov
said that rights are lost when they are not fought for. "If you
don't celebrate May 1, you should protest on May 1," he said.
Kaloyan Pargov, head of the Sofia organization of the BSP, said
that it was time for justice as there was no security, fair
incomes, or dignified life.
