Between 2004 and 2014 Life Expectancy at Birth Increased by 2.1 years - Statistics

Sofia, May 15 (BTA) - Life expectancy at birth of the Bulgarian
population calculated for the period 2012 - 2014 is 74.7 years.
Compared to the previous period (2011 - 2013) it has increased
by 0.2 years, the National Statistical Institute said Friday.

Bulgaria is one of the EU countries with the lowest life
expectancy. The only two countries with lower life expectancy
than Bulgaria are - Latvia (74.3 years) and Lithuania (74.1
years). The highest life expectancy at birth is registered in
Spain (83.2) and Italy (82.9).

Different mortality rates among male and female, as well as
among urban and rural population resulted in differences in the
life expectancy at birth for these population categories. Life
expectancy at birth for male population is 71.2 years, while for
female it is 7.1 years higher - 78.3 years. Between 2004 and
2014, life expectancy at birth increased by 2.1 years both for
female and male.

Life expectancy of the urban population (75.5 years) is 2.7
years higher than of rural (72.8 years). Compared to 2004, an
increase of 2.7 years is observed for the urban population and
of 1.5 years - for the rural population.


Life expectancy at age 65 is 16.1 years. The respective values
for males and females at age 65 are 14.2 and 17.6 years. For a
ten years' period between 2004 and 2014, the life expectancy at
age 65 increased by 1.4 years, or 0.9 for males and 1.4 years
for females respectively.

In a regional aspect, life expectancy at birth varies from 72.4
years in Vidin region to 76.2 years in Sofia. Life expectancy is
higher than the country average in seven regions. Women live
longer than men in all regions, but highest is the difference
between sexes in the regions of Sliven (8.0 years) and
Kyustendil (7.8 years), while the smallest is in the region of
Kurdzhali - 5.8 years.
