State of Disaster Declared in Mezdra After Sunday's Torrential Rain

Vratsa, Northwestern Bulgaria, May 25 (BTA) - A state of
disaster has been declared in Mezdra Municipality because of the
torrential rain and thunderstorm on Sunday night, the regional
press centre said Monday.

The rain has caused floodings of residential and public
buildings, including a kindergarten, in Mezdra's low part and
has activated landslides in the area of the villages of
Reburkovo and Lyutibrod. The residents of a house in Bodenets
village had to be evacuated after the supporting wall of the
nearby road collapsed.

The heavy showers have damaged the railway lines connecting
Mezdra with Rouska Byala and with Roman, causing an interruption
in the train services. The E-79 road was flooded on Sunday
night but now it is open to traffic, the regional administration
said.

The state of disaster will remain in force until the
consequences of the storm have been handled.
