Patriotic Front Co-Floor Leader: State Does Nothing Against Conventional Crime

Troyan, Central Bulgaria (June 27) - National Assembly Deputy
Chairman and Patriotic Front co-floor leader Krassimir
Karakachanov told journalists on Saturday that the state does
nothing to address conventional crime and that this leads to
tensions between Bulgarians and Roma in parts of the country.

Karakachanov said: "Bulgarians are fed up with having to work,
pay taxes and bills, while the Roma skip work, don't pay
anything and live on welfare benefits, beg or steal." According
to him, people's aggression is not so much against the Roma as
is against the inaction of the state in regards to crime and the
lack of justice and equal treatment of all citizens.

Karakachanov said that this problem has existed for 15-20 years
and nothing is done because "Roma votes are bought cheap in
elections".

Karakachanov recalled that the Patriotic Front has set seven
conditions to the government which have to be met otherwise the
Front will withdraw support. The first condition has to do with
conventional crime.

He said that in the upcoming local elections the Patriotic Front
will nominate mayoral candidates in 200-200 municipalities and
in regions with mixed population the candidates will be ethnic
Turks.
