Central Election Commission Launches Awareness Campaign ahead of Local Race

Sofia, July 6 (BTA) - The Central Election Commission (CEC) on
Monday launched an awareness campaign titled "Closer to Voters."
 Until July 24 the commission will visit all 28 regional
capitals in Bulgaria.

The officials will meet with the administrators organizing this
autumn's local elections to explain important aspects of the
preparations for the ballot and will take questions from
journalists and members of the general public relevant to the
right to vote, the residence qualifications rule and voting
preferences. The meetings will be open to all citizens. Details
about the venue and the time of each session are available on
CEC's website www.cik.bg and the regional government websites.

Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) said it will
choose its candidate for Mayor of Sofia from a list of 15
nominees proposed by the BSP chapters in the city's boroughs.
The most frequently proposed nominees are BSP-Left Bulgaria
Coalition Deputy Chair Kornelia Ninova, BSP's Sofia City Council
 Chair Kaloyan Pargov, Georgi Kadiev MP, sociologist Mihail
Mirchev, Iliana Iotova MEP, former Investment Planning Minister
Ivan Danov and former MP Evgenia Zhivkova.

The final candidate will be chosen at a city conference of the
party, which is to be held by July 25.

BSP has already designated all its candidates for municipal
councillors and borough mayors in Sofia and mayors in all 32
villages of Sofia Region.
