Films about Well-off Shrinks Boost Students' Interest in Psychology - Expert

Sofia, August 12 (BTA) - Young people have been strongly
interested in studying psychology largely due to a glorified
idea coming from films about well-off shrinks in spacious
offices or about criminal profilers, Assoc. Prof. Margarita
Bakracheva told BTA. She works at the Institute for Population
and Human Studies with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Many Bulgarian students apply for faddish specialities like
psychology and public administration. However, the unemployment
rate for graduates in them is high, the "Sega" daily reported
Monday.

Bakracheva also commented that most believe psychologists can
see the invisible at a glance and that psychology is all about
individual counselling which secures an affluent lifestyle and
personal success. Young people are also interested in psychology
because they expect it will help them learn more about
themselves and other people. They also expect that knowledge of
this subject will help them solve their problems and become
high-flyers.

She added that psychologists are in demand in many areas
including education, the work environment, health care and
crisis management. What is largely lacking at universities is a
broader range of specialisms.
