Stanishev in Beirut: Everyone Should Take Their Share of Responsibility for Refugee Crisis

Beirut, November 1 (BTA) - During a conference in Beirut Sunday, organized by the Party of European Socialists (PES), PES President Sergei Stanishev said Lebanon is on the verge of a humanitarian disaster and everyone should take their share of responsibility and pool their efforts: the United States, Russia, the Gulf countries and the nations of the region.

Stanishev said: "The European Union can and must spearhead these concerted efforts, as has been shown in the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme. I hope the high-level negotiations in Vienna are the beginning of a political process which will lead to a solution in Syria."

Stanishev is former Bulgarian prime minister and former leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

Social democrats from Europe and the Middle East gathered for this large-scale conference in Beirut, the very centre of the international refugee crisis, to seek together long-term solutions to the problem.
