Bulgarian Company Provides Biodegradable Toothbrushes

Sofia, December 14 (BTA) - A Bulgarian family company is offering biodegradable and environment-friendly bamboo toothbrushes, the e-version of "Capital" weekly says.

"Every year over 4,700,000 million plastic toothbrushes are produced in the world. After that they are thrown away and exude noxious substances," Atanas Arsov of the Norte company says. The company is new and has been offering biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes under the Nordics brand since April.

"A toothbrush is a universal product with fast turnover. There are no special regulations for their sale, as in the case of foods, for example," Arsov said.

The company has found a bamboo supplier in Malaysia who produces the corpus and the fibers. The products are processed additionally in Bulgaria, after which they are packed.

The company began with a sample series of 500 items. They sold in two weeks. The next batch was 1,000 items - already branded and additionally processed with active carbon, which has a whitening effect. The items are sold in bio stores, drug stores, as well as online. Each batch is checked by the Sofia Regional Health Inspectorate.

The beginnings were laid with the family friend working at a drug store in Paris who became a distributor of Nordics. "So far in France they are sold in one store only, but Norte's brushes sell twice the quantity sold on the Bulgarian market in a week," Arsov says. He adds that the company has already received inquiries from distributors in Romania.

He also says that thus far they have invested around 15,000 leva of personal resources into the product, which they plan to start marketing more actively. A procedure for registering the toothbrushes' design has already been initiated, he adds.
