Hundred-year-old Oak to Represent Bulgaria in European Tree of the Year 2016 Competition

Sofia, December 16 (BTA) - An oak tree that is over hundred years old from the Danube Park in Silistra (on the Danube) won the national competition Tree with a Root 2015, organized by the EcoCommunity Foundation. The winner will represent Bulgaria at the European Tree of the Year 2016 competition, where it will compete with trees from 13 countries, the foundation said Tuesday.

The oak tree will undergo a diagnosis check by specialists that will determine what care it needs so that its state can be improved. The oak has an important place in local residents' everyday life, it is always surrounded by people who are gathering energy and strength from it, but until now it has not been protected, wrote the Silistra resident who nominated the tree.

Silistra's oak tree won the national competition with the support of 884 out of 3,600 voters. Next in the ranking are the healing ash tree in the St Pantaleon Monastery near Pernik (Southwestern Bulgaria) with 777 votes, and the plane tree in the village of Petkovo, Smolyan Region (Southern Bulgaria), with 687 votes.
