PM Borissov on Anti-Corruption Summit in London: "I Saw Decisiveness for the First Time"

London, May 12 (BTA) - Commenting on the discussions held during the global Anti-Corruption Summit in London Thursday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said that he saw self-scrutiny and decisiveness for the first time, the Government Information Service reported.

Borissov was in London to take part in the forum, which brought together world leaders, business and civil society to agree a package of actions to tackle corruption.

"Years ago there were talks about joint actions against terrorism and then a common fight began, at present the services work together because one by one, all countries were hit, including Bulgaria," Borissov said. Until now, each country has applied its own measures in the fight against corruption and smuggling, he noted.

"I was impressed by how well-acquainted they are with our activity in the fight against smuggling, the huge success that we are having," Borissov went on to say. He said that International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde will try to visit Bulgaria so as to get acquainted with the work of the bureau for fighting contraband, as well as with all the measures being undertaken. "She will acquaint herself with our activities in the judicial system aimed at making it more effective in the fight against these closely related things: corruption and smuggling," Borissov noted.

The Bulgarian PM also said that the topic of public procurement was raised during the summit, as well as the need of finding a common mechanism in the name of transparency and high-quality construction at a low price. "Obviously, the entire world has a problem with this [public procurement], I am convinced that solutions will be found," he noted. In his words, Bulgaria will support the British initiative for the creation of an international anti-corruption coordination centre.
