Petrova Niva, Southeastern Bulgaria, August 20 (BTA) - Addressing the people gathered to mark the 114th anniversary of the St Elijah's Day - Transfiguration Day Uprising on Saturday, President Rumen Radev said: "Only a nation which remembers its past is ready for the future."

The event took place in the Petrova Niva area where the plan for the revolt against the Ottoman Empire was adopted.

Radev said Bulgaria still remembers that after the uprising was put down by the Ottoman authorities, thousands of Thracian Bulgarians fled the atrocities to settle in Bulgaria. Radev called on the politicians to bear in mind that dramatic migration.

Radev resumed the tradition of Bulgarian presidents attending the commemoration of the uprising after a hiatus of several years. Thracian Society Chairman Krassimir Premyanov, Bourgas Regional Governor Vulcho Cholakov, MPs of GERB and the Socialist Party, public figures and patriots from all over the country gathered for the event.
