Sofia, April 11 (BTA) - Renowned Bulgarian composer Toncho Roussev died at the age of 85 on Tuesday. His family said his passing followed a brief illness. Roussev was one of the best known composers of Bulgarian pop music, loved much by performers and audiences alike.

He was born April 20, 1932 in the Black Sea city of Bourgas. He studied trumpet in the Music Academy, played in the Big Band of the Bulgarian National Radio and founded the Balkanton orchestra and the orchestra of the National Theatre of Satire.

He authored over 1,000 songs, including some of the biggest hits of Bulgarian pop music as well as children's songs, film and theatrical music.

He was successful internationally as his music has sold in the US, the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Russia and most of the former Soviet bloc countries. SN/LN/
