Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov urged the chairs of municipal councils in Bulgaria to propose legislative changes for tackling the problem of illegal dump sites on Thursday.

Genov spoke at the General Assembly of the National Association of Municipal Council Chairs (NAMCC) in the Republic of Bulgaria.

“You are best positioned to see the shortcomings in the current laws on prevention, directives, and punitive measures in this area,” Genov said.

“The Ministry of Environment and Water, through its regional directorates, oversees how mayors fulfil their duties under the Waste Management Act. I have had numerous meetings with mayors to discuss their ideas on managing the removal of illegal dump sites. Many of them express that the task exceeds their capabilities,” Genov noted.

He noted that the current methods for managing the movement of construction waste are very inconsistent.
