Addressing the 61st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations (UN), which brings together 500 delegates from 195 countries that are part of the IPCC, Deputy Foreign Minister Nevyana Miteva said that advancing action on climate change is one of the most urgent tasks of our time. The goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change can only be achieved if the world moves rapidly towards clean energy and sustainable development, she added.

The role of the IPCC is that of a trusted provider of scientific information that governments at all levels can use to develop climate policy. The panels' reports are key contributions to international climate change negotiations, underscoring the importance and relevance of the discussions that will take place over the next seven days, Miteva said.

The climate crisis is not only one of the gravest challenges we face, but it also affects and amplifies all other economic and social problems, the diplomat said, noting that July 22 was the hottest day globally, and this is a global record.

Bulgaria is part of a global trend of adverse weather events such as periods of drought, unusually hot weather followed by devastating storms and floods. As clearly stated in the latest IPCC assessment report, global warming is linked to human activities and greenhouse gas emissions, she said.

"For our actions to be effective, we must base them on clear scientific facts and findings. Here we will rely on your efforts at the IPCC. That is why the findings of your reports are so valuable and their messages need to be spoken loud and clear. I wish you fruitful and productive discussions and a successful 61st session of the IPCC," Miteva said.
