Wreaths Laid at Memorial Plaques of Bulgarian Jews Rescuers in Sofia

A wreath-laying ceremony took place in front of the Memorial Plaques of the Rescuers of the Bulgarian Jews at the St Sophia Basilica in Sofia on Friday, exactly 80 years after their salvation from the Holocaust.

The floral tribute was paid by Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov, Foreign Minister Nikolay Milkov, Innovation and Growth Minister Alexander Poulev, Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, diplomats and members of the public.

The participants in the ceremony reached the plaques in a procession from the Sts Cyril and Methodius National Library where, earlier in the day, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev opened a documentary exhibition marking the 80th anniversary.

Taking part in the procession were President Rumen Radev, Prime Minister Galab Donev, Vice President Iliana Iotova, former Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Israel's Ambassador in Sofia Yoram Elron, prominent Israeli historian and public figure Michael Bar-Zohar, public figures, clergymen and members of the public.

The observances on the programme of the National Initiative Committee Marking the 80th Anniversary of the Salvation of Bulgarian Jews during WW II are under the auspices of President Radev.
