Haskovo region suffers as an economic centre because of its delayed development and absence of good economic policies, said Blue Bulgaria top-of-the-list candidate Tsveta Kirilova on Friday.
She pointed out that the district has an important geographical location bordering on Greece and Turkiye, as well as the regions of Yambol, Stara Zagora, Plovdiv and Kardzhali. However, she criticised that the state and local authorities focus mainly on the economic development of Plovdiv and Stara Zagora, which damages Haskovo Region in terms of serious investment interest.
In order to improve the economic climate of Haskovo Region, Kirilova proposed the restoration of the International Uzundzhovo Fair on the grounds of the former military airport, which has long shut down. The revival of the fair will help preserve and develop local culture and traditions by providing a trading platform to local artisans and traders, stressed Kirilova.
"Centuries ago, the Uzundzhovo Fair was held in the village of Uzundzhovo near Haskovo as one of the most famous exhibitions in Europe. The market grew and during its best years, towards the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, every autumn it welcomed 150,000 people from all over the world", she recalled.
