A total of 1,370 charged individuals and defendants without effective sentences as of election day will be able to exercise their right to vote in the October 27 snap parliamentary elections at 26 voting sections opened in remand facilities or prisons, data from the General Directorate for the Execution of Penalties show. A total of 765 people will be able to vote in prisons and 605 in remand facilities.
In Sofia, there will be three polling stations: at the central prison and two remand facilities.
Under Article 42 of the Bulgarian Constitution, individuals placed under judicial interdiction or serving a prison sentence may not elect state and local authorities and vote in referendums.
According to the Election Code, voting sections are also established at medical treatment facilities, nursing homes, and other specialized institutions for the provision of social services, provided that there are not fewer than ten voters.
