As of April 2, EU nationals wishing to pass through or stay in the UK for up to six months will need an electronic permit, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. Bulgarians wishing to visit the country for tourism, business or a private reason will not be allowed in the UK without an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) after April 2.

Bulgarians will be able to apply for an ETA on the British government's website starting March 5. The applicant needs a valid passport, electronic mailbox, and credit or debit card to pay the tax of GBP 10. In most cases, the application is processed within three workdays, but delays are possible.

The ETA is valid for two years or until the citizen's passport expires, after which a new ETA will have to be obtained. The document allows its holder to make multiple trips to the UK for up to six months in total. Without it, EU nationals will not be allowed to board a plane, train or ferry to the UK. Having an ETA does not guarantee entry in the country.

Those exempt from the ETA requirement are: UK visa holders, British, Irish or British Overseas Territories passport holders; residence, work or student permit holders.
