site.btaLeaders from 130-Plus Countries to Take Part in United Nations General Debate Starting on Tuesday

Leaders from more than 130 countries will meet at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Tuesday for the start of the General Debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly.

The General Debate, part of the High-Level Week, will take place from September 24 to 30 and will be attended by heads of State and government from across the world. The Bulgarian delegation will be led by President Rumen Radev.

In 2024, the Debate will be held under the theme, "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations”. Participants in the debates usually focus their speeches on the proposed theme before addressing issues of their choice.

The conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Russia's war in Ukraine, and the latest developments in Sudan are expected to dominate the annual UN General Assembly summit.

Last week, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the wars in Gaza and Ukraine were "stuck with no peaceful solutions in sight".

The annual meeting of world leaders marks the start of each new session of the UN General Assembly.

While the event features six days of speeches by leaders, much of the action takes place on the sidelines, with hundreds of bilateral meetings and dozens of side events aimed at bringing key issues to the attention of the world community.
