Talking to Bulgarian media at the UN Headquarters in New York, Bulgarian Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said it is of the utmost importance to ensure a good future for the next generations. Bulgaria is participating in the Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow on September 22 and 23.

Glavchev said the Summit, held under the UN auspices, is scheduled to adopt three important documents: a Pact for the Future, a Declaration on Future Generations and a Global Digital Compact.

The Pact for the Future was adopted to applause this morning in New York by all United Nations Member States despite a draft amendment from the Russian delegation. A point of order to decide not to submit this draft to a vote was adopted by 143 votes in favour to 7 against (Belarus, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Nicaragua, Russian Federation, Sudan and Syria), with 15 abstentions.

The caretaker Prime Minister said the Pact for the Future covers several major themes, including peace and security, the future generations, digital cooperation and a consensus on AI development. He noted that peace and security are now under serious threat.

Glavchev greeted the Bulgarians on Independence Day, celebrated on September 22, saying that freedom, independence and unification are interlinked.

He declined to comment on the current political situation in Bulgaria.

Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov told the briefing that the UN is the system where the most important decisions must be taken and the UN Charter must be respected. "The multilateral system should function well, it is our defence against aggression," he said.

Also on the Bulgarian delegation are Bulgaria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Lachezara Stoeva, and Foreign Ministry directors and experts.

The Summit of the Future aims to address challenges and gaps in global governance and revitalize the multilateral system with the UN at its core.
