Andrey Kovatchev, MEP from EPP/GERB, was elected Wednesday as one of the five new quaestors of the European Parliament. Kovatchev will be the only Bulgarian in the EP leadership this session.

Kovachev was elected in the first ballot with the highest number of votes - 559 out of 641 valid votes, with a required majority of 321 votes. The other quaestors are Marc Angel (S&D, Luxembourg), Miriam Lexmann (EPP, Slovakia), Fabienne Keller (Renew Europe, France) and Kosma Zlotowski (ECR, Poland).

On Tuesday, the EP re-elected Roberta Mezzola as President of the institution for the next two and a half years. MEPs also appointed her 14 deputies in two votes.

The vice-presidents and five quaestors, together with the President, make up the Bureau of the Parliament. The Bureau lays down rules for the work of the EP, the institution said in a statement. The Bureau draws up Parliament's preliminary draft budget and adopts decisions on administrative, staff and organisational matters.

The quaestors deal with administrative matters that directly affect MEPs themselves and have an advisory voice in the Bureau.
