site.btaTargovishte to Host Fourth Edition of Plamen Penev International Wrestling Tournament


Over 200 wrestlers from Bulgaria and abroad are expected to compete at the Plamen Penev International Wrestling Tournament in Targovishte, organizers said on Tuesday.
The fourth edition of the tournament will be held on September 27 at the Stadioncheto sports ground, with support from the Targovishte Municipality. Local sports organizers, in partnership with the municipality, are coordinating the event. All matches will be conducted on the stadium grounds behind the Youth Activities and Initiatives Centre in Targovishte.
Over 200 athletes from Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Moldova, North Macedonia, Turkiye, and Ukraine have confirmed their participation to date.
Participants may register in boys' and girls' divisions for those born in 2011, 2012, and 2013, as well as in cadet categories for athletes born in 2008 and 2009. Children born in 2015 are also eligible to compete.
The tournament is expected to be attended by Stanka Zlateva, President of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation; Razvan Pircalabu, Vice-President of the European Wrestling Federation and President of the Romanian Wrestling Federation; as well as several other sports officials.
Plamen Penev earned bronze medals at the World Junior Championships and the European Youth Championships. He competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and won the Dan Kolov tournament that year. Penev served for many years on the Board of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation. He died in 2021 at the age of 46.
