Bulgaria welcomes the UN80 initiative as a step towards a stronger organization and supports the priorities related to reforms that guarantee the Organization's goals for peace and security, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said at his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the press center of the Council of Ministers announced on Friday. The two held talks during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
"We expressed our concerns about the continuing global tensions that are distancing individual countries from achieving these very goals, but also our optimism that there are many opportunities, including through science and technology, to achieve these goals," Zhelyazkov added.
Guterres expressed his gratitude for the support for reforms and congratulated Bulgaria on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the country's membership in the United Nations. Bulgaria's role in the European context as a country in the Black Sea region and the challenges this poses were also discussed by Zhelyazkov and Guterres.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov introduced Bulgaria's new Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Gergana Karadjova.
