An outdoor photo exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of Bulgarian athletics opened in front of the National Theatre in downtown Sofia on Friday. The photos show some of the most successful Bulgarian track-and-field athletes of the last century, who have won titles and medals at Olympic games and world and European championships.
The display was unveiled by Bulgarian Olympic Committee President Stefka Kostadinova and Bulgarian Athletics Federation (BAF) President Ivan Kolev. Olympic women’s 800 m running silver medallist Nikolina Shtereva (Montreal, 1976) and national middle and long distance running record holder Evgeni Ignatov attended the ceremony along with other sport stars.
Kostadinova, herself an Olympic champion (Atlanta, 1996) and world women’s high jump record holder for a stunning 37 years until this past July, said: "I wish the young generation would have sport careers and achievements like ours. The page of athletics is not closed, no, it is open. I wish all young colleagues would follow our example and someday become European, world and Olympic champions, and we would watch them and be happy for them.”
The exhibition has been organized by the BAF in collaboration with Sofia City Hall under the initiative, Sofia: European Capital of Sport. Many of the photos are from the archive of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
