Weightlifter Karlos Nasar, who will be one Bulgaria’s representatives at the Olympics in Paris, improved three world records and won three gold medals during the State Weightlifting Championships in Ruse.

Competing in the junior 89kg clean category, the 20-year-old Nasar made 183kg, thus lifting a kilogram more than the top performance by Yeison Lopez in April.  In the snatch, the Bulgarian international made 225 kilograms, two more than his own world record from December, 2023. He even tried 230 kg but failed. With these results, he improved the best in combined total - 408 kilograms, 12 more than the world record of Chinese Li Dayin from May.

However, Nasar’s records will not be recognized because only Olympic Games, World and Continental Championships, and World Cup achievements count as weightlifting records.

"I'm in the best shape I can be and I'm looking forward to the Olympics. I will do my best to repeat these results there as well," Nasar said.

"If he remains in this shape, it should be a miracle not to become the first," added Ivan Ivanov, the head coach of the national weightlifting team.

The national championships continue on Saturday, when Bulgaria's other two representatives in weightlifting at Paris 2024, Ivan Dimov and Bozhidar Andreev, will take to the podium at the Kanev Centre of Ruse University.
