Bulgaria's highest ranked tennis player Grigor Dimitrov lost 2-6 4-6 6-7(3) to world No. 2 Jannik Sinner at the quarterfinals of the French Open in Paris on Tuesday. The result and Novak Djokovic's withdrawal from the competition due to injury means that Sinner will become No. 1 in the world when the rankings are updated on Monday (June 10).
The Italian played at a high level, scoring 29 winners with only 20 unforced errors and maintained high intensity thorough the whole match, constantly pressuring his opponent. Dimitrov fought to the last point, reaching 40-40 on Sinner's serve at 6-5 in the third set but failed to capitalize on his chances.
The best Bulgarian player in the history of the sport added a new achievement to his career, reaching the quarterfinal of Roland Garros for the first time. He has reached semifinals at all the other three Grand Slam tournaments.
His good performance in Paris may not be enough to keep him in the top 10 of the rankings as the world No. 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas has the chance to overtake him if he wins against world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz later on Tuesday - the match will decide who Sinner's next opponent will be.
