Georgi Vangelov reached the semi-finals of the European Wrestling Championships in Bucharest after recording two wins in the 61 kg category and conceding only two technical points. It emerged later on Saturday that Vangelov suffered an injury in the first seconds of the semifinal match against the 2021 world champion, Abasgadzhi Magomedov.  The Bulgarian will fight for the bronze medal on Sunday if he is fit.

Three other Bulgarian freestyle national wrestlers retained their chance for repechage after performing strongly on the fifth day of the tournament in the Romanian capital.

Vangelov started against Leomid Colesnic of Moldova and defeated him 8:1, after which the Bulgarian national also beat Andrei Bekreneu 3:1, after which he reached the semifinals before injuring himself.
