Bulgaria has its first medallist from the International Boxing Association Junior World Boxing Championships in Yerevan after Angel Dimitrov (48-50kg Fly) defeated Tajikistan's Biloldzhon Iksanov on Wednesday. Dimitrov's victory means that he has guaranteed at least a bronze medal from the tournament.
Dimitrov, third at the 2023 European Championships in Ploiesti, knocked down Iksanov in the first round, then countered every attempt of his opponent to turn around the match. The judges handed a 5:0 victory to the Bulgarian athlete.
To earn his place in the final, Dimitrov will have to defeat Uzbekistan's Khusan Kokhkhorov on Friday.
The Bulgarian delegation trained by Olympic champions Petar Lesov and Stoyka Krasteva will have two more athletes box on Thursday. Yanko Iliev (50-52kg Light Bantam) will face Soban Rehman from Pakistan, while Roselin Bachevski (80+kg Heavy) will fight against Hemant Sangwan from India.
