Bulgarian swimmer Petar Mitsin won the Men's 400m Freestyle event at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Netanya, Israel, on Monday. The 18-year-old representative of swimming club Vihren (Sandanski) took the lead after the 150th metre and did not lose it to the end.

Two Italian swimmers finished behind Mitsin's time of 3:46.49: Alessandro Ragaini won silver with 3:46.66, and Filippo Bertoni got the bronze with 3:48.73.

Mitsin's title is significant in Bulgaria's history, as no other Bulgarian athlete had won a world title in a 50-metre pool. Petar Stoychev achieved a similarly impressive feat, when he won the Men's 25 km competition of the Open water swimming events at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai.

Mitsin's gold on Monday comes two months after he set a new world junior record at the 400m freestyle event in Belgrade on July 9.

The young swimmer is scheduled to compete in three other events in Netanya: 200m Freestyle, 800m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly.
