On August 30, 1987, at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, Italy, Stefka Kostadinova set a world record in the women's high jump, reaching a result of 2.09 metres at the World Championships in Athletics. 

The record of the then 22-year-old Stefka Kostadinova has not been broken to this day. She reached it with 9 successful jumps. After recording a 1.91 metre jump in the qualifiers, in the final Stefka Kostadinova made a total of 13 attempts, of which 9 were successful.

Kostadinova has set 7 world records throughout her career: three outdoor records, and four indoor records.
