Household Deposits Grow Annually by 13.1% at End-September, Household Loans Increase by 20.9%

At the end of September 2025, household deposits in Bulgaria grew annually by 13.1% and household loans increased by 20.9%, the Bulgarian National Bank says in a report which was published on its website on Thursday.

Overall, deposits of the non-government sector were BGN 151.706 billion (69.1% of GDP) at the end of September 2025, increasing annually by 13.2% (11.8% annual growth in August 2025). Deposits of non-financial corporations were BGN 51.123 billion (23.3% of GDP) at the end of September 2025. Compared to the same month of 2024 they increased by 12.9% (9.9% annual growth in August 2025). Deposits of financial corporations increased by 18.8% annually in September 2025 (13.9% annual growth in August 2025) and at the end of the month they were BGN 4.311 billion (2% of GDP). Deposits of households and non-profit institutions serving households (NPISHs) were BGN 96.272 billion (43.8% of GDP) at the end of September 2025. They increased by 13.1% compared to the same month of 2024 (12.7% annual growth in August 2025).

At the end of September 2025, claims on loans to the non-government sector amounted to BGN 114.289 billion (52% of GDP) compared to BGN 112.261 billion (51.1% of GDP) at the end of August 2025. They increased annually by 15% in September 2025 (14.1% annual growth in August 2025). The change of loans to the non-government sector was influenced also by net sales of loans by “other monetary financial institutions” – their volume for the last twelve months was BGN 117 million. On an annual basis, loans sold by “other monetary financial institutions” were BGN 117 million (of which BGN 14 million in September 2025), while there were no loans repurchases for the last twelve months.

Loans to non-financial corporations increased by 9.7% annually in September 2025 (8% annual growth in August 2025) and at the end of the month amounted to BGN 51.320 billion (23.4% of GDP). Loans to households and NPISHs were BGN 53.675 billion (24.4% of GDP) at the end of September 2025. They increased by 20.9% compared to the same month of 2024 (20.8% annual growth in August 2025). At the end of September 2025 loans for house purchases were BGN 30.800 billion and increased by 27.6% annually (27.4% annual growth in August 2025). Consumer loans amounted to BGN 20.941 billion and compared to September 2024 they rose by 13.5% (13.6% annual growth in August 2025). On an annual basis other loans10 increased by 17.3% (18.9% annual growth in August 2025) and reached BGN 526.4 million. In September 2025, loans to sole proprietorships and partnerships without legal status increased annually by 5.8% (10.3% annual growth in August 2025) reaching BGN 542.5 million.

Loans granted to financial corporations were BGN 9.294 billion at the end of September 2025 (4.2% of GDP). Compared to September 2024, they increased by 13.6% (13.2% annual growth in August 2025), Bulgaria’s central bank said.
