The four package waste recovery organizations in Bulgaria, Ecopack, Ecobulpack, Bulecopack and Eco Partners, are launching a national campaign You Buy. You Use. You Recycle. The initiative aims to motivate more citizens to collect their waste separately and to raise awareness of the environmental and social benefits of recycling, the four organizations said in a joint press release on Wednesday.
An online survey conducted in August 2025 among 415 people aged 20 to 55 living in urban areas, over 90% consider separate waste collection important. However, only 44% say they always practise it, 36% do so occasionally, and 20% never separate their waste.
The recovery organizations operate in over 200 municipalities across the country, providing the colour-coded containers for separate collection and fully financing their servicing, as well as the sorting and transportation of waste to recycling facilities.
The organizations noted that the coloured containers have been in use for more than 20 years, but many citizens have yet to develop the habit of separating their waste. The nationwide information campaign will take place in October and November to increase public awareness and engagement, they added.
As part of the campaign, citizens will be able to access information on how to correctly separate waste using two- or three-container systems. The website www.reciklirai.bg will allow users to check which organization operates in their municipality and to find basic guidelines on proper sorting.
The campaign will be communicated through television, radio, outdoor and digital advertising. Materials will also be distributed to all municipalities to reach as many people as possible. After the initiative concludes, an additional survey will be conducted to assess its impact.
The organizations emphasized that separate collection is a key step towards sustainable waste management and the preservation of natural resources. “Every properly disposed-of package matters for the future of us all,” the statement reads.
