A total of 10.8% of those employed in the EU in the second quarter of 2025 worked more than 45 hours per week, combining their main and additional jobs, according to data published by Eurostat on Tuesday. The data reveals significant differences across EU Member States, with the share of people working 45 hours per week being lowest in Bulgaria, 2.5%. 

Next came Latvia with 4.1% and Romania with 5.9%. The biggest share was observed in Greece with 20.9%, followed by Cyprus with 16.6% and Malta with 14.6%. 

A working week of between 20 and 44 hours – including main and secondary employment – was the most common in the EU, accounting for 72.3% of all employed individuals. The highest proportions of people in this category were found in Bulgaria (92.8%), Romania (90.6%) and Latvia (86.9%).

At the EU level, 16.9% of people in employment aged 20–64 worked up to 19 hours per week. This category was smallest in Romania (3.5%), Bulgaria (4.6%) and Greece (6.1%). The highest percentages in this category were recorded in the Netherlands (26.8%), Denmark (25.5%), and Austria (25.3%).
