Retail Turnover Up by 4.9% in August Y/Y, Statistics Show

Retail trade turnover, excluding sales of motor vehicles and motorcycles, remained unchanged in August compared with the previous month, according to preliminary seasonally adjusted data released by the National Statistical Institute (NSI) on Tuesday.

Calendar-adjusted figures show that retail turnover increased by 4.9% compared with August 2024.

In August 2025, turnover in the “Retail sale of automotive fuel and lubricants” category rose by 1.3%. Meanwhile, both “Retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco” and “Retail sale of non-food products, excluding automotive fuel and lubricants” declined by 1.1%.

Within the non-food category, the largest drop was recorded in “Retail sale of computers and communication equipment” – down 6.4%. Growth was reported in “Retail sale of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods” (up 1.9%), “Retail sale in non-specialised stores” (up 1%), and “Retail sale of household appliances, furniture and other household goods” (up 0.7%).

Compared with August 2024, turnover rose by 9.8% in non-food retail trade (excluding automotive fuels) and by 3% in fuel and lubricants. A decrease of 0.8% was observed in sales of food, beverages and tobacco.

Within the non-food segment, all subgroups reported annual growth, the highest being in “Retail sale of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods,” which surged by 19.8%.
