As Bulgaria’s information campaign on the introduction of the euro advances, citizens are becoming increasingly informed and confident, Deputy Finance Minister Metodi Metodiev said during an information session held in Gabrovo on Tuesday. According to him, the campaign is already having a visible effect on public attitudes, as reflected in recent sociological surveys.

Metodiev noted that people are gaining confidence in the fact that the process of adopting the euro is well structured and thoroughly prepared. He emphasized that the public administration and state institutions are fully ready for the transition, both in terms of the legal framework and the technical and logistical infrastructure required for the exchange between the lev and the euro.

He pointed out that Bulgaria has come a long way toward joining the eurozone, with contributions from several successive governments.

“Looking at the big picture, eurozone membership is both an opportunity and a prerequisite that will allow us to achieve faster, catch-up economic growth,” Metodiev said. He added that, as before, the budget process will continue to adhere to strict fiscal rules, as is the case for all eurozone member states.

“We will continue to manage our public finances responsibly. But what’s equally important is that we must also move forward with structural reforms that make our economy more resilient and competitive in the long term,” he explained, noting that work is already underway on the 2026 state budget, which will be drafted in euros.

“The information campaign will continue not only in all major regional centres but also in smaller towns and municipalities, covering about 200 locations across the country. This gives us confidence that by January 1, 2026, we will all be well informed and well prepared for the introduction of the single currency,” Metodiev concluded.

The euro information meetings are a joint effort between the responsible institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, the Bulgarian National Bank, the Ministry of Economy and Industry, the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC), the National Revenue Agency, the Financial Supervision Commission, the National Social Security Institute, among others.

The nationwide information campaign was launched in Burgas (on the Black Sea) on September 2. Bulgaria is set to adopt the euro as of January 1, 2026, becoming the 21st member of the euro area.
