At a briefing for journalists on Thursday, Angel Slavchev MP of Vazrazhdane presented a new bill submitted by his parliamentary group, which provides for changes to the Local Taxes and Fees Act, the party press centre reported. The main goal is to stimulate the use of environmentally friendly vehicles by introducing tax breaks.
"We have introduced a bill to amend the Local Taxes and Fees Act, which will enable all owners of gas-powered cars and hybrids to get up to a 20% discount on car taxes," the MP said.
He said the bill has been in the works for several months and meetings have been held with representatives of the auto industry and trade unions. A key element of the proposal is giving municipal councils the power to determine the specific amount of the rebate.
"We are actually giving municipal councils the ability to make decisions on this. They will decide how much the rebate should be for each car," Slavchev explained.
The bill aims to help municipalities fight dirty air by encouraging citizens to switch to greener transport, the MP said
He expressed hope that the ruling majority will support the proposal, stressing that it is beneficial for the whole society.
